Primary Motivational Gift Assessment

You're exceptionally capable.

But capability doesn't tell you how you're gifted. Discover the God-given motivation underneath the way you naturally operate.

The quiet drift

When you're the person others trust to figure things out.

You can become responsible for almost anything you prove you can do well. You lead. Solve. Teach. Organize. Encourage. Decide. Carry.

And because you can, it can become surprisingly difficult to recognize the difference between what you've become excellent at doing and what you are intrinsically motivated to do.

Your Primary Motivational Gift helps you begin seeing that difference.

Roots reaching into warm soil
Why it's hard to see

High responsibility can make your gifting harder to recognize.

The more capable you become, the more people learn what they can trust you with. Over time, "I can do that" can quietly become "I'm the one who does that."

You develop skills because they're necessary. You learn how to carry responsibilities because someone needs to. You adapt to the environments you're part of. And eventually, competency, responsibility, identity, and gifting can become difficult to distinguish from one another.

That's especially true when you're good at things that don't bring the same joy, energy, or deep satisfaction as the ways you're most naturally motivated to operate.

What is a Primary Motivational Gift?

In Romans 12, Paul describes seven gifts: prophecy, teaching, exhortation, leadership, mercy, giving, and serving. We refer to these as motivational gifts because this assessment is particularly interested in the motivation underneath their expression.

Your Primary Motivational Gift is the recurring internal motivation that appears to most naturally shape what you notice, what matters deeply to you, what you instinctively move toward, and what brings you a particular kind of joy and deep satisfaction.

It isn't simply the thing you're best at. And it isn't necessarily the role you carry most often. Instead of asking primarily what you can do, the assessment looks for patterns underneath what you do:

  • What naturally gets your attention?
  • What matters to you before anyone tells you it should?
  • What are you instinctively drawn to do?
  • What kind of activity produces genuine joy, energy, or deep satisfaction?
  • What has mattered to you consistently across different seasons and circumstances?

Your Primary Motivational Gift points toward the recurring motivation that shows up most consistently across those patterns.

A starting point, not a box

You aren't being reduced to a type.

If you're already thinking, "I can see myself in several of these," that makes sense. You are capable of expressing all seven gifts.

This assessment isn't designed to tell you everything about who you are, define the limits of what you can do, or tell you exactly what God is asking you to carry in this season. It looks for something more specific: which motivation appears most consistently underneath the way you naturally operate?

Your result gives you a starting point for recognizing that pattern across your life. Not a box to fit yourself into.

Why it matters

Capability can DISGUISE motivation.

When you repeatedly demonstrate that you can do something, there's a good chance you'll eventually become responsible for doing more of it.

You may be able to lead the room. Teach the concept. Comfort the person. Fix the system. See the problem. Mobilize the people. Manage the resources.

You may even be excellent at all of them. But your ability to operate in many different ways doesn't mean they all affect you in the same way.

Some responsibilities leave you satisfied because you completed them successfully. Others seem to awaken something in you.

Knowing your Primary Motivational Gift gives you language for recognizing the motivation that appears again and again underneath the way you naturally operate, and creates a foundation for becoming more intentional about how your gifts are developed and stewarded.

The beginning

Identification is the beginning.

Your Primary Motivational Gift does not determine your calling, tell you what role you should hold, or tell you what God is asking you to carry in this particular season. It also doesn't measure how maturely or faithfully your gifts are currently being expressed. Those are different questions.

How has God gifted me, and what motivational pattern has been showing up across my life?

Once you can recognize that pattern, you can begin asking deeper questions about how your gifts are being expressed, how they are being developed, what God is asking of you in this season, and how to faithfully steward the responsibility you carry.

You already know what you're capable of. Now discover what may be underneath it.

  • Maybe you're the person who always sees what isn't true.
  • Or the one who has to understand why.
  • Maybe you can't help seeing what's possible in someone.
  • Maybe you instinctively take responsibility when no one else will.
  • Maybe you feel what others miss.
  • Maybe you immediately see what could be multiplied.
  • Or maybe you see what needs to be done, and start building.

You may recognize yourself in several of these. That's exactly why we created the assessment. In approximately two minutes, you'll answer 12 questions designed to look beneath learned competency and toward the recurring motivation that has followed you across different seasons of your life.
